Producers from private and public broadcasting organizations and freelancers with reports that were broadcast between December 1, 2004, and December 1, 2006, are invited to apply for the “World Awards for Best TV and Radio Programs on HIV and AIDS.” Application deadline: December 1.
The Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) is sponsoring the award with support from UNAIDS. The awards are to be presented during its “HIV and AIDS Global Media Strategies” conference in May 2007.
Awards will be presented in four areas, including the best television program to reduce discrimination against people with HIV, the best television documentary on the treatment of AIDS, the best radio public service announcement on HIV and AIDS, and a viewer's choice award.
Television entries should be from five to 60 minutes long, and radio spots should be less than two minutes long. Winners will receive US$2,000 and should tell the story in a clear and ethical manner while displaying organized research and providing depth and insight.

Grants available for investigative journalists in Africa

Investigative journalists working in Africa are eligible to apply for the Forum for African Investigative Reporters (FAIR) grants to carry out an investigative journalism project of their choice. Application deadline: January 15.
The Netherlands Institute on Southern Africa is funding the grants, which will award two winners EU€4,000 (about US$5,043).
Successful applicants must submit a proposed subject of a societal problem relevant to Africa that they wish to investigate. The proposed investigation must be realistic and newsworthy.
An editor or publisher must be interested in publishing the envisioned project, and applicants must show that their proposed investigation is time consuming to the extent that they could not do this without support.
